Fair board picks new (legal) logo

By SCOTT PESZNECKER

A new logo has been chosen for the 2003 Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee — this time without worries of copyright infringement.

To match the fair's theme of "75 Years of Frog Freedom," the fair board chose a colorful logo showing a leaping frog set against an explosion of yellow, red and blue.

Board members said they preferred the new logo over two other possibilities because they thought it would be more appealing to children.

The artwork selected Wednesday is the work of 58-year-old Ripon resident Anna Ilvess-Barber. The fair board held a contest, gathering submissions from around the county.

"You're kidding! I'll be danged!" Ilvess-Barber said when she found out she won.

Ilvess-Barber, who earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the University of Nebraska in 1968, works in health insurance but said she tries to "keep up doing a little of this and that. I always have a need to do something creative."

She said it took her about a day to draw her computer illustration. She just mailed her entry to the fairgrounds the day before the deadline.

"I thought something colorful would be nice on a T-shirt," she said. "It will be fabulous. I'll have to go out and see it."

However, Ilvess-Barber's artwork wasn't the board's first choice for a logo.

Last month, the board agreed on a logo depicting a dancing frog.

However, worried that the frog looked too much like Michigan J. Frog — a famed cartoon character of Time/Warner — Fairgrounds Manager Buck King faxed a copy of the logo to the corporate giant. Time/Warner replied, telling the fair board to not use the logo.

In other fair board news:

Chart-topping country singer Darryl Worley will be the highlight of the county fair's entertainment schedule, taking the main stage for the fair's big show.

The fair is set to run May 15-18.

Worley had three songs in the top 20 of the Billboard country music charts: "Second Wind," "When You Need My Love" and "Good Day to Run."
