Facade finale, cops money on Angels docket

Nearly five years after it began, the facade improvement program for downtown Angels Camp businesses is expected to wrap up Tuesday with the acceptance by the City Council of a final performance report on the $300,000 grant.

Due to closures and frustrations with a lengthy state review process, the number of businesses interested in the facelifts through a community development block grant dwindled from 18 to the half-dozen who finally received the upgrades last year.

Those were Crusco’s Ristorante, Calaveras Customs, Firefall Jewelers, Gold Rush Originals, the Chocolate Lady and the Salon, each on South Main Street.

The final costs exceeded the grant amount by just $1,041 when including in-kind contributions by the city of $27,814 in staff costs and $2,339 in waived permit fees. The bulk of the expenditure went to construction, a $175,554 contract with American River Construction of Placerville.

Murphys architect Rudy Ortega designed the new facades for $32,252 and Cox Consulting handled administration of the grant and labor standards for $40,000. The amount of $11,996 also went to Judith Marvin of Murphys for historic review work.

The council is also expected to approve a transfer of state-allocated Supplemental Law Enforcement Services Funds from the Calaveras County Auditor-Controller’s Office to cover $50,000 for the school resource officer position in the Angels Camp Police Department and another $50,000 for the agency’s community crime prevention program.

A resolution is also required by state regulations to approve the annual Soroptimists Youth parade that will kick off the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee on May 16. That is because the parade route includes a portion of Highway 49.

PUBLIC MEETING: Angels Camp City Council, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Joe Carley Memorial Firehouse, 1404 Vallecito Road.
