FAA investigates Monday plane crash

Columbia Airport is partially open after Federal Aviation Administration investigators finished an on-scene investigation of a plane crash Monday morning.

The airport was closed all day Monday after a 6 a.m. landing went awry, and two pilots narrowly escaped with their lives.

The pilots, who would not talk to the press or give their names, told Tuolumne County Sheriff’s officers they felt something give way underneath them as they landed a 1978 Beech turbo-prop aircraft registered to Coastal Aviation in Sacramento.

The plane skidded a quarter mile down the runway before stopping. The pilots escaped before it caught on fire.
