Drought won’t prevent pools from opening

Numerous public pools will remain open this summer in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties despite tight water restrictions for much of the area.

In Tuolumne County, community pools in Tuolumne and at Sonora High and Columbia Elementary schools will open for public use on June 13, according to the county recreation department.

County officials have said at public meetings that the public pools will offer respite this year on hot days for residents whose pools may be empty or swimming holes dry.

The Twain Harte pool will be closed over the summer for repairs. The county is in the midst of a $617,000 project to build a storage facility, install a new deck and walkways, upgrade the plumbing and put a new surface in the popular pool. The cost of the project will be partially covered by a $324,000 grant.

Representatives with community pools in Murphys and at Calaveras High School did not return messages in time for this story.

The hottest swimming ticket in Calaveras County, the Bret Harte High School pool, will begin extended summer hours June 9. The actual operating hours are still being set.

A number of summer classes are also offered at the pool. For a listing and updated information, go online to https://bhuhsd-ca.schoolloop.com.

“In a hot summer like this, and with people not able to water their lawns, we will probably be a pretty nice spot to have,” said Lauren Gerber, aquatics director for the Bret Harte High School pool.
