District 5 gets new planning rep

A former supervisor who now lives in Valley Springs will represent District 5 on the Calaveras County Planning Commission.

Wes Hodgson was appointed yesterday and will join four incumbent commissioners on the planning commission.

A commissioner is selected from each supervisorial district by that district's supervisor. Commissioners Ted Allured of District 1, Michael Dell'Orto of District 2, Suzanne Kuehl of District 3 and Bill Mason of District 4 were unopposed in their applications to return to the commission.

District 5 Supervisor Victoria Erickson selected Hodgson from a pool of six candidates.

"I'm sure that whoever I appoint, I will not be stepping up to the plate for some people," said Erickson.

She said her constituents have had varying opinions about all the candidates: Hodgson and fellow Valley Springs residents Shirley Moore and James Estorga and Copperopolis residents Katherine Bowers, Betsy Duncan and David Lander.

Hodgson, a supervisor from 1979 to 1983, also sat on the Calaveras Unified School District Board of Trustees from 1983 to 1992.

He takes his appointment to government office seriously.

"County government's primary purpose is to protect the environment and serve the people who live in the county," Hodgson said.

On his application, Hodgson said future growth in the county relies on business growth to provide solid jobs and a larger tax base. More local jobs would also help keep residents in the county, he said.

"Bedroom community growth alone will not generate the tax base needed," to accommodate the growth the foothills are likely to experience, Hodgson said on his application.

Hodgson said he did not intend to apply for the Planning Commission, but changed his mind when friends encouraged him to do so.

Hodgson earned his associate's degree at Ventura City College in 1948 and holds state contractors licenses in general building and lathing and plastering.
