Count confirms Kuntz win

Calaveras County Elections Office staff Thursday released official results from the June 3 primary election, confirming earlier announced outcomes.

The final numbers, which include 220 provisional ballots, confirm that Sheriff Gary Kuntz beat challenger Pat Garrahan with 56 percent, or 6,709 votes, compared to Garrahan’s 5,254 votes. Kuntz’s second four-year term starts in January.

Overall, 12,614 ballots were cast out of 27,263 registered voters in the county, meaning voter turnout was more than 46 percent.

Runoffs slated for the Nov. 4 general election include the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors districts 3 and 5.

In District 3, which spans the Highway 4 corridor from Murphys to the Alpine County line, incumbent Merita Callaway, of Forest Meadows, will face Michael Oliveira, of Arnold.

Callaway received more than 39 percent of the vote, or 1,208 votes, while Oliveira got nearly 33 percent with 1,011 votes. Mike Borean, of Hathaway Pines, placed third with nearly 28 percent, or 856 votes.
