Child support deal offered

Parents who have lost drivers' or professional licenses because they have fallen behind on making child support payments can take advantage of a new program to get those licenses back.

Gina Bachtelle, senior child support specialist with the Tuolumne County Department of Child Support Services, said the goal of a new kinder, friendlier and easier program is to get parents who don't pay to start paying.

Many people might think it takes thousands of dollars to get their licenses back, Bachtelle, said, but the county agency can take a minimal payment — $10 or $25 — in some cases.

Bachtelle said the child support department just wants to get people back on track making their payments.

Historically and statistically, most non-custodial parents are men. But percentage-wise, men and women share equally as non-payers, Bachtelle said.

In honor of Father's Day this Sunday, the department is opening its doors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday so parents who owe can contact support specialists.

"Maybe the support order is too high, or based on old information. If that is the case, then we can help. We're in the market for making deals," Bachtelle said.
