Two high-country passes that had been closed for the winter will open in time for the three-day, Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Highway 108 over Sonora Pass and Highway 4 over Ebbetts Pass were expected to be open by 2 p.m. today. Highway 120 over Tioga Pass is expected to open by June 6.
The weather is cooperating for the first holiday weekend of the outdoor recreation season.
The National Weather Service forecast is for clear skies and mild temperatures through Tuesday.
Lows will range from the 30s and 40s in the high country to 40s and 50s in the foothills. Highs are expected to be in the 70s and 80s in the foothills and range from the 60s to the 80s in the high country.
Several high-country campgrounds off Highway 108 will be open this weekend.
Meadowview Campground at Pinecrest still had open sites this morning. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
High-country Forest Service campgrounds that will be open include Cascade, Fence Creek, Boulder, Brightman, Dardanelle, Pigeon Flat, Eureka Valley, Baker, Deadman and Sand Flat.
Campgrounds still closed because of snow include Mill Creek, Niagara Creek, Niagara Off Road Vehicle, Herring Reservoir and Herring Creek.
Beardsley Dam Campground, Beardsley Day Use Area and Pinecrest Day Use Area will be open.
Campgrounds off Highway 4 that will be open include Board's Crossing, Waka Luu Hep Yoo (Wild River) and Sourgrass Day Camp.
No high-country Forest Service campgrounds off Highway 4 will be open this weekend.
The Tuttletown and Glory Hole recreation areas at New Melones Reservoir have more than 300 campsites, and about three-quarters of them were still available this morning, spokeswoman Krista Reinhard said.
