Calaveras leaders weigh staff cuts

Calaveras County continues its “reduction mode” by proposing to cut funds and staff, all while expecting similar reductions next year.

That was the message from county staff Tuesday at the start of the Board of Supervisors week-long county budget hearings. By the beginning of next week, the board is expected to pass a 2014-15 spending plan.

Despite the grim forecast, the county is relying less on one-time funding sources in an effort to come up with a sustainable future budget where revenues balance expenses.

“I don’t think any department asked for something they don’t need,” County Administrative Officer Lori Norton told the board. “Unfortunately, we can’t afford what we need.”

For example, the Sheriff’s Office requested a $9.26 million budget, yet Norton is recommending an $8.67 million budget.

The largest percentage of the county’s $37.4 million general fund appropriations goes to public safety, which includes the Sheriff’s Office, district attorney and probation.
