Calaveras judge election draws 3

Candidates continue to pull paperwork in Calaveras County for the June 3 primary election, with three people now vying for judge of the county’s Superior Court.

Tim Healy, a Stockton-based prosecutor who lives in Wallace, held a press conference Wednesday afternoon in San Andreas to formally announce his candidacy.

About 40 people — including area law enforcement, attorneys, community members and media — gathered outside at the Calaveras County Government Center to listen to Healy outline his background and answer questions.

As a deputy district attorney in San Joaquin County, Healy has prosecuted cases involving homicide, elder abuse, domestic violence, robbery and sexual assault. He is currently the lead attorney of the San Joaquin County Child Abduction Unit.

Other candidates include than Hugh Swift and John Trifilo.

Swift, an Angels Camp resident, was appointed late last month to the judgeship by Gov. Jerry Brown.

He was sworn in Dec. 31 and is expected to start hearing cases this month.

Swift has been executive officer at the Calaveras County Superior Court since 2011. He also served in several positions — including court commissioner and executive officer — at the Amador County Superior Court from 1999 to 2011. He has been practicing law since the mid-1980s.

John Trifilo, a Murphys attorney, mainly practices family law with some personal injury cases. He said his nearly 40-year career as an attorney, in both Santa Clara and Calaveras counties, makes him an ideal candidate for judge.
