The Resource Connection Food Bank served fewer people last year, but the numbers still amounted to 15 percent of Calaveras County’s population.
The San Andreas food bank served an average of 1,079 households per month in 2013, down from 1,255 households a month in 2012, according to a recently released report.
“I’m grateful we were able to serve that many people, but it would be wonderful to see those numbers go down,” said Jeannie Hayward, food bank director.
Since the recession, the food bank has seen a dramatic spike in those needing food. In 2008, the food bank served an average of only 71 families per month.
The food bank opened its current location in February 2009 just as the need was becoming greatest.
