Calaveras Jail inmates moved

An enclosed tunnel connecting the new Calaveras County Jail to the basement of the county’s courthouse was used by inmates for the first time Monday.

The tunnel allows inmates to walk from the jail to a holding cell, where a bailiff escorts them to a courtroom.

Inmates were transferred from the old county jail to the new, 77,000-square-foot jail late last week.

“It went very smooth,” Sheriff’s Sgt. Anthony Eberhardt said of the transition.

The new jail, which replaces an outdated 65-bed jail, has the capacity to house 160 inmates. However, due to staffing the new jail will be kept at a maximum of 80 inmates.

On Monday, the jail housed 68 inmates.
