Calaveras High to get new theater

The Calaveras Unified School District on Tuesday heard a “hard cost” plan for its final bond project — a multi-million dollar performing arts center at Calaveras High School.

Project Manager Brett Hayes updated the board and public on Placerville-based Carter-Kelly Inc.’s plans to build the performing arts center, which put the project at $3.6 million in “hard costs,” or direct construction costs.

With architectural and state fees, the total cost will be closer to $4 million, according to Superintendent Mark Campbell.

The project has been downsized from the original plan submitted in January 2013, which was about $5.5 million. The board at the time narrowly turned down the project because the district would have had to foot some of the bill out of its operating budget, Campbell said.

Only about $4.2 million in state-matching funds remains of the district’s $13.5 million Measure A passed in 2006, Campbell said. To cut costs, the center’s seating was reduced — from 500 to 300 — and the scope of the stage, stage lighting and catwalk were reduced.
