From goat shows to rodeos, this year's Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee is open to a variety of participants.
The fair board is looking for young people to become members of the Junior Fair Board. They must be attending a Calaveras County High School.
Junior members, who act as ambassadors for the fair, will be involved in several areas of the fair, including working on the stages, in the office and in the livestock barns.
Students get a behind-the-scenes look at the fair's operation from planning to execution, and have an opportunity to develop leadership and public relations skills.
The junior board began in the early 1970s as a project for a 4-H exhibitor and was so successful, it became a permanent part of the fair.
Junior board applications are available at Calaveras High School, Bret Harte High School and the Fairgrounds administration office.
The junior livestock program has been expanded this year, and will include not only a market-goat exhibition, but a BoerBoer cross-goat-breed show.
The most popular of the meat breeds being exhibited at California fairs is the Boer Goat, the product of organized selective breeding beginning in the late 1920s in South Africa.
The goats raised in the Untied States are descendants of the South African Goats. Good quality Boer goats are large and strongboned.
The goat show will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 15.
Exhibitors will have the opportunity to sell their market goats at the 2003 Junior Livestock Auction at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 18.
Cowboys and cowgirls can now enter the Western horse events at the fair.
The entry deadline is 6 p.m. Friday, April 11. Applications can be left in the drop box near the fairgrounds administration office.
The number of participants is limited in each event, and calf branding is already full. But Alpine, Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne county residents are eligible.
Livestock producers who lease pasture in Calaveras County are also eligible to compete. Participants can enter twice in any event on two different teams as long as the event is not filled up with single entries.
