Cal Unified faces financial shortfall

The Calaveras Unified School District has declared itself on a warning budgetary status, but no big cuts are planned.

The Board of Trustees on Tuesday accepted the second interim budget report for the school year, which outlines a reserve balance falling below the state-mandated minimum in 2016.

Fiscal Services Director Titia Ashby said the district’s reserve fund is projected to fall to 2.7 percent of expenses, with 3 percent being the state requirement.

Ashby said the district has done a good job of remaining frugal and setting aside money for the dwindling budget. The budget included $1 million in cost cuts to supplies and service expenses, which have been paid for in this year’s budget and should last the district awhile, she said.

The district includes Calaveras High School, San Andreas Elementary, Mokelumne Hill Elementary, Toyon Middle School, Jenny Lind Elementary, Valley Springs Elementary, West Point Elementary and Rail Road Flat Elementary.
