Cal Fire station gets new tree

A young redwood tree recently planted at Cal Fire’s Altaville station will be dedicated next week — four years after a nearly 60-year-old redwood was felled to make way for the station’s parking lot.

A dedication ceremony is planned for Monday morning at the station, along Highway 49 at the northern end of Angels Camp.

Lifelong city resident Tim Folendorf, who spearheaded the effort to try and save the original redwood, said the dedication and subsequent plaque will document when the new tree was planted.

That way, he said, the state “can’t cut it down in 50 years when we’re all dead and gone.”

The controversial decision to remove the large redwood drew a variety of protesters, including Merita Callaway, who sits on the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors.

“We had ribbons, signatures collected, trips to Sacramento,” she recalled.

To no avail the tree was cut, and Folendorf is hoping next week’s official dedication will prevent a similar occurrence in the future.

“We don’t want the state coming in some day and saying they want to put in a driveway (where the new tree is),” he said. “I mean, I spent six months of my life trying to save that tree.”

Folendorf said the ceremony is tentative as he wants the local fire crew present. He said the crew is currently assigned to the large Monticello Fire in Yolo County.
