Cal Fire station gets new redwoods

A ceremony held Monday at Cal Fire’s Altaville station dedicated a young redwood tree and also showcased two tables made from the felled redwood that once stood at the station.

Roughly four years after the nearly 60-year-old redwood tree was cut to make way for the station’s parking lot, the ceremony was intended to document the new tree as well as two other tiny redwoods planted in early spring.

The process to rebuild the Altaville station — along Highway 49 at the northern end of Angels Camp — began in the early 1990s, and by the late 2010s plans were underway for its construction, said Battalion Chief Mario Hernandez.

“During this process it was determined that the redwood tree that stood for years in the station’s front yard would need to be removed,” he said. “This caused many members of the community to question the building plan. Making government look at alternatives again is a healthy thing. The state reviewed the project and decided to move forward with their plan.”

Construction on the $4.2 million station started in the fall of 2010, and was completed in 2012.

As part of the construction plans, the state planted a new redwood tree next to the station, where Monday’s dedication ceremony took place.
