CAT VOLLEYERS BEGIN SEASON WITH VICTORY

ATWATER — Sonora High School got off to a good start with a 15-5, 15-4, 15-6 volleyball victory over Atwater on Wednesday night.

The Wildcats' attack as led by their senior duo of Jessica Peterson, who hit hit 25-for-28 with eight kills, and Michelle Banks, who hit 17-for-20 with three kills. Junior Margaret Hemphill chipped in with three kills of her own.

Once Sonora got rolling, Atwater was swept aside.

"We definitely had first-game jitters at the very beginning and it was point-for-point to 5-all," Sonora coach Darla Mayhew said. Then we got into a rhythm and there was a huge change on the court. From then on we played real solid and kept a real wide variety in our attack."

Peterson added four tip kills and nine blocks and Banks had five blocks and Kim Lorenzen three.

Other stats:

Serving — Katie Huynh 13-for-14 with two aces, Banks 11-for-15 with six,, Angela Pinocchio 9-for-9 with two, Peterson 6-for 9-with two, Jill Thompson 4-for-4 with two.

Setting — Nikki Rodriguez 39-for-45 with nine assists, Pinocchio 17-for-19 with two.

Digs — Banks nine, Peterson two, Rodriguez two.

Sonora plays its home opener tonight at 6:30 against Beyer of Modesto.

Sophomores — Sonora (1-0) rolled to a 15-2, 15-4 victory over Atwater. Holly Barton served 11-for-11 with three aces for 10 points, Lindsy Evans served 3-for-5 with three aces for three points, hit 5-for-5 with three kills and had three blocks, and Haley McColloch served 8-for-8 for seven points, had one kill and went 3-for-3 on serve receive.

Freshmen — The Alleycats (1-0) topped Atwater 8-15, 15-10, 15-7. Top servers were Katherine Lee (15-for-16, 12 points, three aces), Lauren Mojico (8-for-9, seven points, two aces), Erica Chabot (9-for-9, six points, one ace) and Caitie Deatsch (3-for-4, three points).
