Calaveras County supervisors will conduct a second interview with the finalist for the open position of county administrative officer as early as next week.
The second interview will be done in a Monday afternoon closed session, said Interim Administrative Officer Clay Hawkins.
The search for a new chief of county operations is in its 16th month.
"We're close now," said Hawkins, who said he could not release information about the candidate.
The field of five candidates was narrowed to one in a July closed session. Background checks on the lone finalist are almost finished, Hawkins said.
If the board opts to hire the finalist in the upcoming interview, Hawkins said, it would be about a month before the new administrative officer arrives and signs a contract.
"It's all going to be based on the second interview, and if the board feels it wants to make a hire or not," Hawkins said.
The position has been open since April 2001, when Brent Harrington left the job to work for the Regional Council of Rural Counties. Hawkins, the county Office of Emergency Services director, has been serving in the interim.
Last November, county supervisors opted to restart the search for a new administrative officer because the four-person interview panel couldn't agree on a finalist among six applicants.
