Burson man guilty of real estate conspiracy

A Calaveras County man was convicted Tuesday in federal court of participating in a year-long foreclosure auction bid-rigging conspiracy.

Donald M. Parker, of Burson, along with Andrew B. Katakis, of Modesto, was found guilty following a four-week trial in the U.S. Eastern District Court in Sacramento, the U.S. Attorney’s Office on Tuesday announced.

Parker and Katakis were indicted in December 2011 on charges of bid rigging and conspiracy to commit mail fraud.

The jury did not reach a verdict on a count of mail fraud against Katakis and Parker, however, Katakis was found guilty of obstruction of justice for deleting electronic records from his computer after he learned of the investigation.

The bid-rigging conspiracy convictions carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $1 million fine. The obstruction of justice conviction carries a penalty up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Auctioneer W. Theodore Longley, of Roseville, was charged with aiding and abetting the alleged conspirators. The jury found Longley not guilty.
