Bret Harte High cleared of lockdown

The Bret Harte High School campus is no longer on lockdown after police swept the campus for a person reported with a gun.

The school was put on lockdown about 9:15 a.m. following the phoned-in report.

It is was not part of the Every 15 Minutes program. The campus just minutes earlier was participating in the Every 15 Minutes program, an annual anti-DUI program involving a staged fake auto accident.

Junior and senior students were corralled on the campus tennis courts and other students remained in their classrooms while officers search the campus with weapons drawn, just minutes after the mock emergency finished, according to Superintendent Mike Chimente.

Alonzo Nalls, a freshmen, said “At first I thought it was a drill because my teacher was really calm about it. But then when it ran into break, we realized it was real and got quiet. We were all sitting together where we couldn’t be seen. When the sheriff rattled the door, we all jumped a bit, but then our teacher told us it was just the sheriff and to stay calm.”
