Bones found in reservoir tested in Santa Cruz

Human skeletal remains found late last month by a fisherman at Camanche Reservoir are under investigation at a Santa Cruz laboratory, according to the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office.

The remains are being analyzed and dated by scientists in Santa Cruz, as they may be historic in nature.

The bones were found by a fisherman about 6 p.m. June 22, Sheriff’s Sgt. Anthony Eberhardt confirmed.

A Calaveras County sheriff’s deputy and detective arrived shortly after the find and collected the evidence, Eberhardt said.

The incident is not being investigated as a homicide, he said.

There are no signs of foul play. Evidence collected showed the bones had “obviously” been buried for a long time, Eberhardt said.

The remains were partially buried in the mud and were only discovered because of the low water level — the result of this year’s drought. The water level has receded about 30 to 40 feet this year, Eberhardt said.

East Bay Municipal Utility District, which stores its water in the reservoir, was also notified, Eberhardt said.
