Bear homeowners want to buy resort

A movement to have Bear Valley Mountain Resort run as a cooperative is gaining momentum.

After a prospective buyer of the ski resort backed out last year, a Bear Valley homeowner pitched the co-op idea at a homeowners association meeting in the fall.

An “exploratory” group, consisting of Bear Valley business owners and homeowners, researched the idea. Following a town hall meeting late last year, the Bear Valley Mountain Cooperative was officially launched this week.

“It would be a community-run, owned and managed mountain,” said Mike Wallenfels, a Bay Area resident who owns a home in Bear Valley.

A share in the cooperative is proposed to cost $2,500, which could be purchased through a single payment or in 36 monthly installments. In addition to being a “voting owner” of Bear Valley, other proposed benefits include discounted season passes, a special co-op member ski lift line and free skiing for those 70 and older.
