‘Bean kettle’ building leveled?

PUBLIC MEETING: Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors, 9 a.m. Tuesday, Board of Supervisors Chambers, fourth floor, County Administration Center, 2 S. Green St., Sonora.

The Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to consider on Tuesday a proposal to demolish a small portion of the Historic Big Oak Flat Gamble building known as the “miners’ bean kettle.”

The bean kettle building is a small, rundown structure connected to the west wall of the recognizable stone Wells Fargo building on Highway 120.

The Southern Tuolumne County Historical Society owns the Gamble block, which includes the Gold Rush-era Wells Fargo building, the bean kettle and an adjacent historic home. Long-term plans for the site involve using it as a museum, according to a report on the proposal from the county Community Resources Agency.

The wooden and corrugated metal shack is unstable. The historical preservation group is looking to disassemble the building, salvaging the materials.

The bean kettle building was built in 1870 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places along with the larger Wells Fargo building.
