Angels man’s photo in Smithsonian

Dave Bunnell, an Angels Camp man who specializes in cave photography, will have one of his photographs featured in an upcoming Smithsonian exhibit.

His photograph of Fossil Cave, in a remote area of Northern California’s Lava Beds Wilderness, will be displayed as part of a new exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.

The exhibit, titled “Wilderness Forever: 50 Years of Protecting America’s Wild Places,” opens Sept. 3 and coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act.

Bunnell, 62, has been the longtime editor of the National Speleological Society’s monthly magazine.

The group is “dedicated to the exploration, study and conservation of caves,” he said.

Caves are actually part of what drew Bunnell to move to the Mother Lode from Santa Cruz about 15 years ago.
