Angels agrees to charge for grazing

The City of Angels Camp is now accepting proposals from ranchers who would pay to graze their animals on city-owned land.

The land — about 200 acres on the city’s southern edge — includes 60 acres irrigated with the city’s treated wastewater.

The idea of renting pastureland came from a discussion last month regarding the city paying for goats to graze the land.

During a meeting Tuesday night, Angels Camp City Council members gave city staff the OK to move forward with accepting proposals to rent the land. No formal vote was taken.

City Engineer Dave Myers said after the meeting the statewide drought could make the land appealing.

“Irrigation is going to be a hard thing this year,” he said.

Sonora-based Bushwacker Goats has been grazing the acreage for the past 12 years, with the exception of a brief absence in 2009.
