Angels Camp inks new water pact

The Angels Camp City Council entered into a new agreement Tuesday night with the Utica Water and Power Authority — a move that could help keep water rates down.

Under the agreement, the city would pay $40,000 per year, and the amount of water allocated to the city would jump from 1,600 acre-feet to 3,600 acre-feet annually.

With an increased water supply, there is the potential to eliminate $6.7 million of projects listed in the city’s Water Master Plan. That plan has a total of about $17.5 million in water treatment, supply and storage projects identified for the city’s future, said City Engineer Dave Myers.

“Overall, I think this is a good agreement for the city,” he told the council.

Reducing water supply improvements will impact a pending water-rate study due this spring or early summer, city staff said.

“This means if there’s any increase (to water rates) it wouldn’t be as much as before,” Myers said after the meeting. “It would be a lesser increase.”
