500 Boy Scouts to visit Frogtown

By MIKE MORRIS

Nearly 500 Boy Scouts from throughout California and Nevada will converge this weekend at Frogtown.

They'll camp, fire guns, jump frogs and eat ice cream at Calaveras County's fairgrounds during their annual convention for scouting's national honor society, Order of the Arrow.

"We get together once a year for fellowship, training and a good time," said Bruce Mayfield, a 47-year-old Bay Area print broker, who's the scouts' regional adviser.

Mayfield's region consists of Northern California and all of Nevada, with the exception of Las Vegas. Last year the convention was in Lake Tahoe. Next year it will be in Fresno. This year it's Angels Camp.

A nod to the group's 30-year history, this weekend's theme is "30 Years and Still Hopping." On Saturday, the scouts will have frog jumping contests.

Scouts, most ages 14 to 18, will check into the convention from 5 p.m. to midnight tomorrow. They pay a $30 registration fee.

Tomorrow a pow-wow, with Native American dancing and drumming, is planned. It's also a great time to meet other scouts and make friends, Mayfield said.

"We'll teach whatever we can find that's topical and allows the scouts to develop their leadership," he said of Saturday morning's training sessions.

That afternoon there will be volleyball and archery competitions.

Scouts will also have access to the fairground's shooting range before an evening show complete with jugglers and ice cream.

The scouts will leave Sunday after a closing ceremony. All participants are to spend the entire weekend at Frogtown, except for 30 new scout honor society members who will take an excursion to Moaning Cavern in Vallecito.
