Greek immigrants serve up success


A Tuolumne County family of restaurateurs is living the American dream, one breakfast platter at a time.

The Mitsopoulos family has owned the Pine Tree restaurant next to the Best Western Hotel on Hess Avenue for the past 13 years and they have owned six other restaurants in the U.S. and Canada. In addition to the diner they own several rental properties in California.

La Bella Rosa opens Sonora shop


    The new La Bella Rosa Winery tasting room and gift shop in Sonora is designed to offer visitors a multi-layered taste of Italy.
    Visitors will be able to taste wines made by owners Don and Lynda Peterson, sample specialty food items such as olive oil, olives and vinegars, and browse through home decor products and gifts, all in the spirit of Tuscany.
    Lynda Peterson said she comes from Italian ancestors, and she loves Tuscan decor. It fills her home as well as the tasting room at La Bella Rosa Winery and the new tasting room and gift shop.

Carson Hill plant gets concrete investment


    Investment in a new technologically advanced concrete plant has a Carson Hill contractor eyeing big projects and adding jobs.
    The 20-foot-tall plant at Carson Hill Rock Products south of Angels Camp is Caltrans-certified, which allows the company to bid projects like the upcoming Highway 108 bypass extension in East Sonora, the new courthouse and jail being built in San Andreas and the Tuolumne County Law and Justice Center, said dispatcher Pete Hill. It began operation almost eight weeks ago.

Angels firm aids Midwestern town


    A small architecture firm in Angels Camp is helping to rebuild a tornado-ravaged town halfway across the country with high-tech modular buildings.
    Aspen Street Architects is in charge of building a temporary home for St. John’s Regional Medical Center after a massive twister destroyed the building in Joplin, Mo.
    The firm is designing modular hospital units to fit together like a giant jigsaw puzzle, with the goal of completing construction in April, according to company founder Dave Hitchcock.

Longtime Sonora appliance center to close in Jan.


    A 60-year-old Sonora area appliance store is closing under pressure from a poor economy, falling sales and competition from big box retailers.
    Algeo’s Appliance store at 14235 Tuolumne Road will go out of business on Jan. 31, according to owner Ray Kelleher. While the store will close, Kelleher will continue to operate his appliance repair business online and at various vendors in Tuolumne County.
