The auto body repair wing of Sierra Motors in Jamestown was closed for 30 days following a ruling by the The California Bureau of Automotive Repair in August.
The BAR took disciplinary action against the business following a complaint by a customer who claimed the body shop charged for work that was never finished on a 2003 Toyota Tacoma.
Sierra Motors owner, John Alexander, said the incident occurred three years ago and that the discrepancy stemmed from an error in how the company keeps track of estimates. He said the company did not deliberately overcharge, but decided to settle the case because fighting the BAR’s ruling in court would cost far more in legal fees.
The Sierra Motors reached a “stipulated settlement” with the BAR that requires the mechanical department to close for three days and the body shop to close for a month.
Alexander said he didn’t agree with the ruling and hopes it won’t hurt his business’s reputation. Located on 5th Avenue in Jamestown, Sierra Motors has been in business for the past 10 years.
