The closeout discount retailer Big Lots will have its grand opening in Sonora at 9 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 21 The event will kick off with a ribbon cutting and the presentation of a $2,500 check to Sonora Elementary School.
Big Lots will occupy part of the space that formerly served as a Mervyns in the Sonora Crossroads shopping center. The same building also will house national retailers Jo-Ann Fabric and PetSmart.
Jo-Ann Fabric is expected to open by winter, while PetSmart plans to open by the end of fall. Combined, the stores will employ between 100 and 150 people.
Big Lots sells items ranging from food, health and beauty products, to apparel, home decorating products, electronics, furniture, toys and gifts. It deals in close-out products, derived from surplus retail inventories. The Sonora store will encompass 20,000 square feet.
“We encourage Sonora residents to think Big Lots when it comes to deciding where to spend their hard-earned money,” said senior vice president of marketing Rob Claxton. “We know they will love this new store and the values we offer on the products they want and need.”
Based in Columbus, Ohio, Big Lots is a Fortune 500 company with revenues above $4.6 billion. The company operates 1,415 stores in 48 states, and 88 Liquidation World stores in Canada. There are 172 Big Lots stores in California, including Ceres, Modesto, Stockton and Turlock.
