Transit bus catches fire

A Tuolumne County Transit bus was engulfed in flame Friday morning in the Tuolumne City area, forcing the evacuation of its driver and passenger.
No one was injured in the fire.

According to Tuolumne Fire Protection District Engineer Tony Powers, the district received the call at 8:40 a.m. to respond to a transit bus fire located on Tuolumne Road just north of Woodham Carne Road.
By the time engines arrived, the fire had spread halfway through the bus.
"It was about 50 percent involved, and that's where it ended," Powers said.
The cause of the fire has not determined, but according to Pennie Ray, a former wildland firefighter who stopped to assist, sparks were visible coming from the engine area.
The flames began in the engine compartment and spread to the driver and then passenger compartments.
According to Tuolumne County Transportation Council Executive Director Darin Grossi, Bus 27 had over 300,000 miles on it, and was set to be phased out later this year.
"We've already ordered new buses, which are under construction at this point in time," Grossi said.
