William ‘Bill’ Benjamin Bernard
Dec. 3, 1926 — March 3, 2010

    Jamestown resident William “Bill” Benjamin Bernard died March 3 at his home. He was 83.
    He was born in Alameda. He served as a seaman first class, quartermaster, in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
    He was active in the Masonic Lodge in Chico for more than 50 years.
    He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for more than 50 years, earned his Eagle Scout Award, Order of the Arrow, and was honored with the Silver Beaver Award.
    In 1950, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo. He later received his teaching credentials and master’s degree from Chico State College.
    He first taught in Orland and later at Citrus Elementary School in Chico. His first experience in administration was as principal and teacher at Feather Falls. He then was accepted as principal at Valley Springs Elementary School, then moved to San Andreas Elementary School, which included overseeing Copperopolis Elementary School.
    He retired after 12 years as superintendent and principal of Jamestown Elementary School.
    After retirement, he was interim principal, first at Chinese Camp Elementary School, then Sullivan Creek Elementary School. He then supervised student teachers through California State University, Stanislaus, through spring 2009.
    He was a member of the Columbia Presbyterian Church of the 49ers and served as an elder, personnel committee member and usher. He was also active at Interfaith Community Social Services in Sonora.
    He and his wife were members of the Twain Harte Twirlers square dancing group and danced past 80 years of age.
    His interests included reading, telling stories, family history, hiking, camping, fly-fishing, exercise and talking with friends.
    Mr. Bernard is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jeanette (Cameron) Bernard; his sister, Elizabeth “Betsy” Knight, of Oak Harbor, Wash.; children and their spouses, Nancy Cannon, of Modesto, Douglas and Sonia Bernard, of Rohnert Park, Timothy Bernard and his partner, John Consedine, of Santa Rosa, Debra and Steve Martinelli, of Sonora, Christopher and Ann Bernard, of Santa Rosa; grandchildren, Joshua and Jaymie Cannon, Eliott and Philip Bernard, Mandy and Megan Martinelli and Victoria Bernard; and two nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd D. Bernard and Ruth (Overholtzer) Bernard; and one infant granddaughter.
    A memorial service was scheduled for 3 p.m. today at Columbia Presbyterian Church of the 49ers.

Robert ‘Bob’ Franklin Miguel
Nov. 6, 1933 — Feb. 24, 2010

    Former Tuolumne County resident Robert “Bob” Franklin Miguel died Feb. 24 at his home in Oakdale after less than a year of battling cancer. He was 76.
    He was born in Oakland to Charles and Dorothy Miguel, the youngest of three children, where he attended school through high school.
    He served his country with honor for two years in the Army during the Korean War, and was stationed in Germany.
     He had lived in Sugar Pine and Twain Harte for 24 years before moving to Oakdale, where he lived for seven years. He enjoyed being a truck driver for 57 years, with some time out as a dispatcher and plant manager. His family said he loved cars, attending classic car shows and watching NASCAR races.  
    Mr. Miguel is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jo Miguel; children and their spouses, Rob and Karen Miguel, of Yorba Linda, Don and Sonja Miguel, of Nevada, Lisa and Randy Hurlburt, of Oakdale, and David and Diane Miguel, of Nevada; grandchildren and their spouses, Lindsay and Bryan Bingham, of Yorba Linda, Kristy and Jeff Llewellyn, of Anaheim Hills, Jamie and Francis DeRollo, of Riverbank, Shawna and J.P. Pitassi, of Oakdale, Heather and Zach Zogorski, of Oakley, Rusty Langley, of Oakdale, Kelsey and Joe Unger, of Nevada, and Masey Miguel, of Murietta; and eight great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Chuck Miguel and Dorothy Jensen.
     Services were held Feb. 27 at Oakdale Memorial Chapel.
    Donations can be made to Optimal Hospice, 122 W. Granger Ave., Modesto, CA 95350.
    Oakdale Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
