Agnes Gwerder Oct. 13, 1922 — March 2, 2010 Murphys resident Agnes Gwerder died Tuesday at her home. She was 87. She was born in Switzerland. She was a devoted parishioner and Altar Society member of St. Patrick’s Church, her family said. She also was previously active with the Independence Hall Quilters of Arnold, Calaveras Seniors, San Joaquin Valley Swiss Club, Aelpler Gruppe Swiss Club, and the Edelweiss Club of Sonora. She enjoyed Swiss music, playing bingo with the seniors of Murphys, card games, and especially knitting, crocheting, needle point and quilting. She loved her garden full of roses, daffodils and fruit trees, and baking was one of her favorite hobbies and specialties. After raising their family in Fremont, she and her husband retired to Arnold in 1979. They moved to Murphys in 1984. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Dr. Don and Bertha Gwerder, of Switzerland, Art and Sue Gwerder, of Pleasanton, Janet Tsui-Gwerder and Felix Tsui, of Danville; grandchildren, Eric Gwerder and his wife, Rayan, of Fremont, Christopher Tsui, of Stockton, Sarah Gwerder, of Pleasanton and Brianna Tsui, of Danville; and siblings, Lina Manser, Martha Truniger, Elizabeth Wiederkehr and Adolf Mathis, of Switzerland. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Josef, in 1997. Her sister, Margrith, who also recently died will be buried on the same day. A viewing will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and Angels Memorial Chapel. Family and friends are invited to attend a rosary and Mass that will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Church, 615 Sheep Ranch Road, in Murphys. Matthew ‘George’ Hightower July 25, 1952 —Feb. 28, 2010 Longtime Sonora resident Matthew “George” Hightower died Feb. 28 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 57. Born in Laramie, Wyo., he had lived in Sonora for 49 years. He worked as a gold miner for six years. A graduate of an Angels Camp high school, he served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and was a member of E. Clampus Vitus. Mr. Hightower is survived by his wife, Marian Hightower, of Sonora; sons, Matthew Hightower Jr. and Wayne Hightower, both of Reno, Nev.; brothers, Michael Hightower, of Lebec, and David Hightower, of Sacramento; sisters, Darlene Millikin, of Wyoming, Sheryl Edwards, of South Dakota, Deborah Petty, of Washington, and Rebecca Radovan, of Minnesota. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Heuton Memorial Chapel. A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mountain Shadow Cemetery. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. Glen Kirkendall April 29, 1922 —Feb. 23, 2010 Former Sonora resident Glen Kirkendall died Feb. 23 at Yuma Regional Medical Center in Yuma, Ariz. He was 87. Born in Parker, S.D., he had lived in Yuma for 14 years. Prior to Arizona, he lived in Sonora for 15 years. He worked as an electrician in construction for 40 years. He was a member of the Sonora Elks Lodge, Sonora Moose Lodge and the Electrical Workers Union No. 332 in San Jose. Mr. Kirkendall is survived by his daughters, Linda Enault, of Yuma, Kathleen Arnold, of Sweet Home, Ore., and Carol Leinbach, of Oregon; brothers, Karl Kirkendall, of Illinois, Maurice Kirkendall, of Nevada; a sister, Lavada Johnson, of Illinois; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Millie, in 2005; and a brother, Delmar Kirkendall. No local services are planned. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. Margaret Taft Aug. 17, 1913 —Feb. 23, 2010 Copperopolis resident Margaret Taft died Feb. 23 at a Sonora convalescent home. She was 96. Born in California, she had lived in Copperopolis for 23 years. She worked as a hospital housekeeper for 13 years, and enjoyed reading, gardening and her dog. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Russell Taft, of Copperopolis; a son, Allan Taft, of Turlock; and a daughter, Cynthia Moretton, of Copperopolis. No services are planned.
