Dennis Lee Hansen
Dec. 27, 1942 — Jan. 23, 2010

    Longtime Tuolumne County resident Dennis Lee Hansen died Saturday at his home after a four-year battle with liver cancer. He was 67.
    Born at Alameda Naval Station, he had lived in Tuolumne County since 1945. He graduated from Modesto Junior College with an engineering degree. In the 1960s, he was involved in building design in Sonora, was self-employed in a drafting business and worked for Ray Deutch as building designer and eventually took over the business.
    He was also a driver hauling logs for various lumber companies. In June 1971, he was a housing construction manager for Boise Cascades’ Pine Mountain Lake, Lake Don Pedro and Rancho Calaveras subdivisions.
    He worked for Tuolumne Regional Water District II in 1976 and 1977. He worked for Raymond Vail and Associates in the architectural and engineering division in 1980.
    In August 1988, he passed an exam attained his architecture license. For the past 20 years, his business — Dennis Hansen Architect — has done architectural design on various commercial, residential, and historic renovations throughout the county.
    He was a member of American Institute of Architects, American Institute of Building Design, Sonora Elks Lodge for 39 years, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, National Liberty Ship Memorial SS Jeremiah O’Brien, Harley Owner’s Group, National Trust for Historic Preservation, National Rifle Association.
    His interests were classic car restoration, motorcycles, airplanes, World War II history, banjos, boating, traveling.
    Mr. Hansen is survived by wife of 21 years, Jan (Querio) Hansen of Jamestown; children and their spouses, William and Judy Hansen of Sacramento, and Erika and Daniel Rucker of Fairfield; grandchildren Maxx and Jakk Hansen of Sacramento, and Gavin and Phaedra Rucker of Fairfield; sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Jon Joslin of Sonora; nieces; and William and Erika's mother, Yvonne Nau Scott of Sacramento.
    A celebration of life was scheduled for 1 p.m. today at the Sonora Elks Lodge, with a reception to follow.
    In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Sierra, 20100 Cedar Road North, Sonora, CA 95370.

Owen Allen Hardage Jr.
March 19, 1926 — Jan. 27, 2010

    Retired U.S. Navy Chaplain Owen Allen Hardage Jr., a former Tuolumne County resident, died Wednesday in South Carolina. He was 83.
    Born in Francisco to Owen Allen Hardage and Mary Cole Hardage, he was a member of Peace Presbyterian Church in Goose Creek, S.C., and a former member of the First Baptist Church of Sonora.
    He was also a member of the Military Officers Association, Biblical Archaeology Society, and a lifelong student of the Bible, history and biblical archaeology.
    He was ordained as a minister in Long Beach in 1953. He was a member of several ship associations and a plank owner of the USS Lowry and USS Bon Homme Richard. His naval career included service in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
    In addition to his wife of 61 years, Ruth, he is survived by five daughter, Lani Hardage-Vergeer, of Redwood Valley, Valerie Dearborn, of South Lake Tahoe, Karen Schmitt, of Sanford, Fla., Alison Edwards, of Silver Springs, Md., and Jessica Davis, of Ladson, S.C.; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Evelyn M. Henley
April 9, 1917 — Jan. 19, 2010

    Longtime San Andreas resident Evelyn M. Henley died Jan. 19 at a San Andreas convalescent hospital. She was 92.
    She was born in West Fenwick, England, one of 11 siblings. She moved to Fourth Crossing in Calaveras County in 1946 and settled in San Andreas in the mid-1950s. Among her community activities, she was a charter member of the Calaveras High School Quarterback Club, and a homemaker. Her family said she was a true Briton.
    Her survivors include her son, Chris Henley of San Andreas; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous family members in England.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, James Henley, and a daughter, Audrey Root.
    A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at San Andreas Memorial Chapel.

Florence Elaine Schmidt
Aug. 24, 1915 — Jan. 24, 2010

    Murphys resident Florence Elaine Schmidt died Sunday at Mark Twain St. Joseph's Hospital in San Andreas. She was 94.
    She was born to Frank and Marie Barsotti in Woodbridge. She attended local schools and graduated from Lodi High School. She attended Healds Business College in Stockton. She married Edward Schmidt on Aug. 15, 1936, and had three daughters.
    In 1949, the family moved to Angels Camp and opened a Western Auto store. They also ran the Angels Hotel.
    She worked in the store, kept the books and was a chambermaid in the hotel.
    In 1957, the store was moved to Hanford. There she became a bookkeeper in the office of Drs. Christiansen and Kerr.
    Her family said that she loved to be with people and loved helping them.
    She joined her husband in retirement at the age of 63. They traveled to Asia, Europe, Mexico and extensively in the United States.
    In 1992, they returned to the Mother Lode, settling in the Murphys Diggins, where they enjoyed being close to the their family. She enjoyed walking, exercising and playing bridge. After her husband died, she remained in Murphys until January 2009. At the age of 93, she moved to Foothill Village.
    She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Saundra “Sandi” Wimberly of San Andreas, and Nancy and Tom Floyd of Forest Meadows; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons.
    Visitation is scheduled from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday at Angels Memorial Chapel. There will be a Rosary, followed by a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at noon Friday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, at 619 Sheep Ranch Road, in Murphys.
    Internment will be private.
    Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
