The Rev. Henry Johnston June 18, 1928 — Dec. 21, 2009 The Rev. Henry Johnston died Monday at his home in Arnold. He was 81. He is the pastor emeritus at St. Patrick’s Church in Angels Camp, where he served from 1985 to 2002. Prior to that, he served the Stockton Diocese as an associate pastor in Stockton and Modesto. His interests included music and golf, as well as religion. He could readily speak on any of the three in great depth, his family said. Before his ordination as a priest in 1978, he was a Rosminian brother in Ireland, where he worked with orphans. He raised funds for a brass band, then learned and, in turn, taught each instrument to band members. He took them on a grand tour of European capitals. Several of his students went on to become accomplished musicians. He also spent more than 30 years battling diabetes. Services at St. Patrick’s Church in Angels Camp on Sunday include a Reception of the Body at 2 p.m., Rosary at 2:15 p.m. and a Vigil at 6 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Patrick’s Church in Angels Camp. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Murphys. Memorial donations may be made in his name to California ProLife Council, 2306 J St., Sacramento, CA 95816-4746. Darrell S. Peck April 28, 1946 — Dec. 18, 2009 Darrell S. Peck, of Merced, died Dec. 18 at a Stockton care center after a lengthy illness. He was 63. Mr. Peck was born and raised in Modesto. He graduated from Downey High School and attended the University of Nevada, Reno, campus. He was a Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Navy in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, on a swift boat. He worked most of his life in hotel management in Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Jose, Fresno and Sonora. Most recently, he was a tour bus driver for Via Tours of Merced. His interests included camping and fishing in the Beardsley Reservoir area, volunteering at Camp John Mensinger and spending time with people, especially his three grandsons. Mr. Peck was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Peck, and mother, Imogene Peck. He is survived by his wife, Susan Peck, of Twain Harte; daughter and son-in-law, Christina and Christopher Bannerman, of Stockton; son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Briana Peck, of Sonora; sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Ken McFeeters, of Spring Creek, Nev.; stepmother, Barbara Peck,of Modesto; stepsister, Diane Jacobsohn, of Sonora; grandsons, Orion and Logan Peck, of Sonora, and Braden Bannerman, of Stockton; and nephews, Chris Mayo, of Susanville, and Tony Williams, of Spring Creek, Nev. At his request, no services are planned. There will be a celebration of life after the first of the year at his daughter’s home in Stockton. Donations may be made to Memorial North Hospital in Modesto or the Boy Scouts of America in Modesto. Neptune Society handled arrangements. Wanda Rea Sept. 25, 1924 — Dec. 20, 2009 Jamestown resident Wanda Rea died Dec. 20 at Tuolumne General Medical Facility. She was 85. Mrs. Rea was born in Flat River, Mo., and married Mendel Rea, a career U.S. Air Force airman. The couple lived in many places, including six years in Japan. Mrs. Rea loved to decorate her home and was affectionately known as “Mrs. Clean.” According to her family, she was a great pinochle player. Mrs. Rea was preceded in death by her parents, John Eden and Maude Ragsdale Eden; and her sister, Christine Deese. Mrs. Rea is survived by her husband of 63 years, Mendel Rea, of Jamestown; her son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Gail Rea, of Twain Harte; her granddaughter and her spouse, Dana and Ian MacMillan, of American Canyon, Napa County; sisters Glenda Corey, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Mary Groman and Ruth Munsain, both of Springfield, Mo.; her brother and sister-in-law, James and Carolyn Eden, of St. Louis, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Private family graveside services will be held at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon. A reception will be held at a later date. A donation in her name may be made to the Parkinson’s Institute, 675 Almanor Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94085-2935. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Lucille ‘Lucy’ (Thomas) Robinson Jan. 8, 1927 — Dec. 18, 2009 Lucille “Lucy” Robinson died Dec. 18 at a Sonora convalescent hospital. She was 82. Born in Seminole, Okla., she moved to Tuolumne County with her family 75 years ago. She was a homemaker for 60 years. Her interests included painting ceramic projects with her daughter, Alice; playing bingo at Chicken Ranch casino, and watching westerns on television. She was a member of the Mill Villa Cribbage Club for 10 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cy Robinson; daughter, Jan Smith; granddaughter, Rochelle Robinson; and a sister, Lillian Comer. She is survived by brothers, Lloyd and Lonnie Thomas, both of Sonora; sister, Lois Hempsted, of Silt, Colo.; four children, Jerry Robinson, of Tacoma, Wash., Kenneth Robinson, of Sonora, Vicki Robinson, of San Jose, and Alice Taylor, of Sonora; eight grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. The date of a memorial service will be announced later. Heuton Memorial Chapel handled arrangements. |
