Ramona P. ‘Mona’ Carter Dec. 7, 1919 — Nov. 4, 2009 Ramona P. “Mona” Carter, of Sonora, died Nov. 4 at a Sonora care center. She was 89. Mrs. Carter was born in Kansas City, Mo., and raised in San Francisco by her mother, Harriet Somers. Her father, Emeran Francis Helfentsrieder, died soon after her birth. Her education included time as a student of the Catholic convent at Mission Dolores, in San Francisco. Her family said she frequently mentioned sharing her birthday with Pearl Harbor Day. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was one of the first Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) during World War II. Her assignment was at the Naval District Intelligence office in San Francisco. During the war, she met and married Detroit native Albert J. Carter. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Her family started in San Francisco with daughter, Leah, and son, Jay. They moved to Concord in 1951. Her interests included buying and refinishing antiques, astrology, politics and Chihuahuas. Her family said she was a spiritual person and took care of many little dogs over the years. She lived in Walnut Creek, Lafayette, San Ramon and Pleasanton before building a house in Twain Harte in 1986. She spent the last year of her life at a Sonora care center. She is survived by her daughter, Leah Day, of Lake County, and son, Jay Carter and his wife, Kathleen, of Livermore; her grandchildren, Deidre Bayer and her husband, Hans, of Sonora, Kristen Hanson, of Gardnerville, Nev., Jason Carter and Marshal Carter, of Livermore, and Zack and Casey Volk, of Davis; and great-grandchildren, Gretchen Bayer, of Sonora, and Cole and Carly Taunton, of Nevada. John ‘Jack’ McMullen Jan. 7, 1945 — Nov. 12, 2009 John “Jack” McMullen, of Coulterville, died Nov. 12 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 64. Mr. McMullen was born in Buffalo, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and was a commercial and residential painter for 30 years. He moved to Coulterville seven years ago, where he was a founding member of the Shindig Committee. He enjoyed playing guitar and fishing. Mr. McMullen is survived by his girlfriend, Brenda Perguson, of Groveland; his daughter, Megan H. McMullen, of San Diego; brothers, Paul McMullen, Jan McMullen and Michael McMullen, all of Pennsylvania; his sister, Teresa McMullen, of Pennsylvania; and close friends Peter Venturini, of Coulterville, and J.D. and Cindy Banning, of Oakdale. DAVIS — Charles Davis, 88, died Nov. 19 at his Sonora residence. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. GARMAN-FISCHER — Heidi Garman-Fischer, 62, died Nov. 12, at her Rail Road Flat home. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at the American Legion Hall, 2769 Upper Dorray Road, Glencoe.
