Following is a list of events planned in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties on and around Veterans Day, which is observed on Wednesday.
• Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4748 will host an event at the
Tuolumne Veteran’s Memorial Hall at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Opening and
closing prayers will be given by Chaplain Bill Nabors. Speakers will
include Frank Smart, who will be introduced by veteran and county
Supervisor Dick Pland. County Supervisor Teri Murrison will also
attend.
Music will be provided by Snooky Dye and Flo Griggs of the
Leftovers Band. Music instructor Gail Buzzard will send Summerville
High School students Zack Rich and Charlie McClung to perform their
rendition of Taps. There will also be a presentation of the life of
Sgt. Wilbur Strong, a 14-month prisoner of the Stalag 17 prisoner of
war camp in Germany.
• A Veterans Day Memorial Golf Tournament in memory of Tuolumne
County’s fallen heroes will begin at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pine
Mountain Lake Country Club. Registration will start at 10:30 a.m. with
an aircraft flyover. Entry fee, including dinner and charitable
donation, is $40, plus green fees on a variable scale. Extra dinners
are available for $30. Proceeds will benefit the Fisher House of Palo
Alto, helping the families of military veterans. For more information,

• VFW Post 2600 will make rounds in Calaveras County. At 10 a.m.
Wednesday, post members will visit the Mark Twain Convalescent
Hospital. At 11 a.m., they will gather at the Veterans Memorial at the
Calaveras County Government Center for a 21-gun salute and program.
Senior Vice Commander Ron Adams will lead the service, and veterans
will be encouraged to speak about their time in the military. After the
service, veterans can go to Post 2600 for a free lunch. Non-veterans
pay $5 for the meal.
• Boy Scouts Troop 353 from Angels Camp will retire flags at 10
a.m. Wednesday in Utica Park. The scouts will also kick off their
annual holiday food drive, which will conclude the following Saturday.
• Native Daughters of the Golden West Ruby Parlor 46 will serve a
Veterans Day pasta dinner beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Native
Sons Hall at 389 Main St. in Murphys. Dinner is $7, free for veterans.

• The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation will waive day-use fees at New
Melones Reservoir for the public. The National Park Service is also
waiving fees for admission to Yosemite.
• On Saturday, the Seventh-day Adventist Church will hold its ninth
annual Recognition Day for veterans. The focus is on Tuolumne County
veterans and their service for the country. The service begins at 10:45
a.m. and is open to all veterans and their families.
Chaplin Norman Goodwin, a retired commander from the U.S. Navy,
will lead the ceremony. Dr. Gerard Adron will perform a Vietnam-focused
piece called “Before You Go.” Leslie Goodwin, the chaplain’s twin
brother, will present a history of the recognition service.
