William ‘Bill’ Brown
Feb. 18, 1931 — Sept. 4, 2009

    William “Bill” Brown, of Copperopolis, died Sept. 4 at a Sonora hospital. He was 78.
    Born in Shelton, Wash., Mr. Brown was a 15-year resident of Copperopolis. Before that, he was general manager of Lifetime Pools in Palo Alto for 27 years. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
    He was a member of Sons in Retirement and a member of the SIRS recreational vehicle group. He also belonged to the M&M Group in San Carlos.
    His interests included RV travel, boating, hunting, hiking, restoring old guns, reading and playing poker.
    Mr. Brown is survived by his wife of 58 years, Diane Brown, of Copperopolis; two sons, Rob Brown, of Hollister, and Tom Brown, of Sacramento; two brothers, Richard Brown, of Springfield, Ore., and Robert Brown, of Ashville, N.C.; and grandchildren, Cameron Brown and Cassandra Brown, both of Sacramento, and Cloe Brown and Carson Brown, both of Hollister.
    A celebration of life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Outcast Hall in Poker Flat. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

James Gregory Tischler
Jan. 9, 1938 — Sept. 2, 2009

    James Gregory Tischler, of San Andreas, died Sept. 2 at a San Andreas hospital. He was 71.
    Mr. Tischler grew up in St. Paul, Minn., moved to San Jose in 1986 and settled in San Andreas seven years ago. He was a retired maintenance manager.
    He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Charlotte Tischler, of San Andreas; three children and their spouses, Gene and Sasha Tischler, of San Jose, Thomas and Karen Tischler, of Columbia, and Suzanne and Barry Peterson, of Crestview, Fla; siblings, Kenneth Tischler, of North Branch, Minn., Richard Tischler, of St. Paul, Minn., and Barbara Wood, of St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
    A service has been held. San Andreas Memorial Chapel handled arrangements.

Theodore ‘Ted’ Burkan
July 19, 1920 — Sept. 3, 2009

    Theodore “Ted” Burkan died Sept. 3 at his Sonora residence. He was 89.
    A native of New York, Mr. Burkan graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University. He was a retired real estate broker, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He lived in Sonora for eight years.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen, in 2007, and his son, Lee, in 1976.
    He is survived by three sons, Bruce Burkan, Wayne Burkan and Barry Burkan; four grandchildren, Sharon Burkan, Jonathan Burkan, Amber Burkan and Rebecca Kishineusky; and one great-grandson, Nathaniel Pine.
    No local funeral services are planned. Inurnment will be in King Solomon Memorial Park in Clifton, N.J.
    Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Pauline (Danner) Howard
June 7, 1923 — Sept. 8, 2009

    Pauline (Danner) Howard, of Tuolumne, died Sept. 8 at a Sonora hospital. She was 86.
    She was born in Livingston, Tenn., and lived in Tuolumne for 63 years.
    She was a school bus driver at Summerville Elementary School for 21 years. She was also a 4-H club leader for five years and a member of the Tuolumne United Methodist Church. Her interests included sewing, genealogy, traveling and visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her father, William Danner, in 1967; her mother, Lee Brown Danner, in 1966; a sister, Alice Danner Wilmoth, in 1991; a brother, Clay Danner, in 1989, and a daughter-in-law, Cathy Howard, in 1999.
    She is survived by her husband, Shirley Howard, of Tuolumne; children, Doris Howard Lillis and her husband, Lewis, of Brookings, Ore., and Darrell Howard, of Riggins, Idaho; grandchildren, Kristi Lillis Ropp, of Newport, N.C., Daniel Lillis, of Colfax, Darolyn Howard Utz, of Idaho, and Jamie Howard Simar, of Idaho; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
    Donations in her memory may be made to the Foundation Fighting Blindness Inc., 11435 Cron Hill Drive, Owings Mill, MA 21117-2220.
    A service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home’s Tuolumne chapel, Bay Avenue and Pine Street. Terzich and Wilson is handling arrangements.

Darrell Richards
Aug. 27, 1948 — Sept. 4, 2009

    Darrell Richards died Sept. 4 at his Jamestown home. He was 61.
    He was born in Tulsa, Okla., and lived in Jamestown for the past 25 years.
    He was a service manager for propane companies for 25 years.
    He is survived by his daughter, Brandy Suhama, of Battle Ground, Wash.; four sons, Andrew Richards, of Dublin, Michael Richards, of Dixon, Anthony Richards, of Nampa, Idaho, and Darrell Richards Jr., of Beth Page, Tenn.; three brothers, Donnie Richards, of Oklahoma, David Richards, of Mississippi, and Dennis Richards, of Oklahoma; a sister, Darlene Beach, of Mississippi; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
    A potluck celebration of his life will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Red Barn in Tuttletown. Heuton Memorial Chapel handled arrangements.

Richard W. Evans
Sept. 16, 1942 — Aug. 27, 2009

    Richard W. Evans died Aug. 27 at his Arnold residence. He was 66.
    He was born in Duluth, Minn. He graduated from Stagg High School in Stockton in 1960. He attended San Jose State College, and was in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1964 to 1970.
    He also worked for the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.
    He is survived by a friend, Steve Jacobs, of Castro Valley.
    No services are planned. Inurnment will be in Park View Cemetery in French Camp.

Betty Rae Smith
Oct. 1, 1928 — Aug. 7, 2009

    Betty Rae Smith died at her home in Murphys on Aug. 7. She was 80.
    Mrs. Smith was born in Factoryville, Pa. She served in the U.S. Navy as a registered nurse and also worked as a nurse in the cancer ward at San Jose Hospital.
    Her family said she was a devoted housewife and was very involved in the Methodist church, where she served as lay minister. She was in the Eastern Star. Other interests included cooking, decorating cakes, sewing and jigsaw puzzles.
    She was preceded in death in 1985 by her husband of 35 years, retired U.S. Navy Lt. Robert William Smith.
    She is survived by her sons, Robert Smith, of Soulsbyville, and Steve Smith, of Oak Harbor, Wash.; grandchildren, Steffanie and Jacob Reed, of Soulsbyville, William Reed of Proctor, Mont., Chris Smith, of Texas, Arron Smith, of California, and Noel Smith, of Washington; 12 great-grandchildren; five brothers and two sisters.
    A service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Masonic Lodge in Murphys.
    Memorial donations may be made to the Eastern Star cancer fund or to Amador-Calaveras Hospice, P.O. Box 772, Murphys CA 95247. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home handled arrangements.

    CASPARY — A memorial service for Larry Caspary, 69, of Tuolumne,  is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 19985 Cedar Road, Sonora. He died Sept. 3 in Gilroy after a 10-month battle with cancer. Habings Funeral Home in Gilroy handled arrangements.
