‘Trek’ SHS project moving forward

WORK CREWS work on demolishing a portable classroom at Sonora High School to help make way for a new track. Maggie Beck/The Union Democrat
The Sonora High Wildcats are one step closer to getting an all-weather track and stadium lights that don’t block views of the football field.

On Saturday, volunteer crews demolished an old portable building to make way for a lighting pole.

The Trek for the Track Foundation has raised slightly over $200,000 of its $500,000 goal, said foundation chairwoman Jeanie Smith.

On Saturday, crews demolished a “dilapidated” 30- by 50-foot portable building previously used for the special education woodworking class, said demolition supervisor and committee member Mike McConnell.

Local contractor Lee Moyle donated use of an excavator and Gary Stegall, Rick Modrell and Audie Archer donated end dumps to haul the building to the Farmington Landfill, McConnell said.

The building stood where underground wiring and a light pole will be installed.

However, the plans for the track and lighting are still awaiting approval from the Department of State Architects, and no actual construction can begin until the plans are approved, McConnell said.

The Trek committee must wait until school is out next summer, in 2010, to install the lights, he said.

Donations for Trek for the Track can be sent to Sonora High School, 430 N. Washington St., Sonora, CA 95370, or can be made online at www.trekforthetrack.org.
