Mary Lee Barton
June 15, 1945 —June 19, 2009 Mrs. Barton was the first female elder ordained in the Sonora Seventh-day Adventist Church. She and her husband, Joel Barton, ran a ministry at the Tuolumne County Jail and Sierra Conservation Center. In addition, they ministered in a home for at-risk boys in Santa Rosa, and preached in churches from Yosemite to San Francisco. According to family, she was most noted for her “powerful and beautiful” prayers and will be greatly missed. Mrs. Barton was preceded in death by her father, Ethan Jones; and her brother, Roy Jones. She is survived by her husband, Joel Barton, of La Grange; her mother, Ethel Sherman; sisters Dorothy Huggins, Lula Simmons and May Simon; brothers Willie Jones and Walter Williams; children Carmen Mizera, Rebecca Thompson, Bruce Anderson and Kirk Anderson; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Sonora Seventh-day Adventist Church sanctuary, 40 N. Forest Road, Sonora. Skylawn Memorial Park of San Mateo is handling arrangements.
