Candidates start filing for coming elections in special districts

Seats on 26 utility and service district boards around Calaveras County — ranging from the Murphys Sanitary District to the Three Cent Flat Community Services District — will be decided by a mail-in election Aug. 25.

As of Thursday, 22 county residents were officially in the running for spots on 12 boards, and filing papers by several more candidates were being processed by county Elections Office staff members.

No one had yet filed papers in 14 other fire, memorial, community services, recreation or sanitary districts.

The candidate filing period began May 4 and ends May 29, except in the case of boards with no incumbents seeking re-election. In those cases, the filing period will be extended to June 3.

The latest information available from the Elections Office shows incumbents in 10 districts are seeking new terms, and there will be contested races in at least two districts — Calaveras Public Utility District and Calaveras County Water District.

In the CPUD race for three opening board seats so far are incumbents Charles C. Moore, Dave Ortegal and John Lavaroni. Challenger Bill Perley is also seeking a CPUD seat.

In the CCWD election, candidates Don Stump and Dan Emerson will vie for the post representing the Arnold area that Bertha Underhill now has. Underhill has said she will not seek a new term. Board Chairman Bob Dean, of Mokelumne Hill, and Ed Rich, representing the Copperopolis area, are running uncontested so far.

Information on other candidates who had filed candidacy papers later this week was not available. The Elections Office issued this list of candidates with papers already processed:

Ebbetts Pass Fire Protection District — two four-year terms — incumbent J. Scott McKinney.
