Youth photography display needs a home |
Teenagers on probation displayed their photographic talents Friday night at the Tuolumne County Library in Sonora.
The photos were taken by youths age 14 to 18, who are wards of the Tuolumne County Juvenile Court and on probation, as part of the New Horizons After School Program. New Horizons is a mandated program for teens on probation and also operates during the summer, said Deputy Probation Officer Cinnamon Lampi. “We are interested in finding a place to display the photography,” Lampi said. “We’re looking for any opportunities to display and get the program known.” The program exposes teens to numerous activities, but mainly digital photography and Adobe Photoshop. Students went on field trips, cameras in hand, to Cover’s Apple Ranch, Columbia Nursery, Mounted Dream Riding Center, Chinese Camp, New Melones Reservoir, the Tuolumne River Canyon Trail and Pinecrest, Lampi said. New Horizons teens were encouraged to take as many pictures as possible and each student’s best ones were displayed at the library Friday night. “I thought it was beautiful,” Lampi said of the display. “People enjoyed themselves and enjoyed the art.” In addition to photography, students take cooking classes, go horseback riding, visit the Humane Society, learn about training dogs, tour the college, hike and learn about firefighting. They also have gone metal detecting for gold.
“It’s to spark an interest,” Lampi said of the program. |
