Jan Gorgas She was born in Oakdale, the first child of Myer and Martha Ball. A graduate of Sonora High School and San Jose State College, she loved the arts, her family said. She practiced watercolor and oil painting in her middle years and operated a small gallery for several years on Columbia Way. She was also an alcoholism treatment counselor in Santa Cruz, San Joaquin and Tuolumne counties. In later life, she was a real estate agent in Tuolumne County. Mrs. Gorgas was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, James O. “Bud” Ball; and a son, Jeffrey Gorgas. She is survived by her daughter, Marnie Gorgas, of Jamestown; her son, Bill Gorgas, of San Francisco; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to VNA-Hospice, P.O. Box 4805, Sonora, CA 95370.
The family will have a small private service in celebration of her life. A native of Norfolk, Va., Mr. McDowell retired as a chief petty officer after a 23-year career with the U.S. Navy. He worked the past seven years as a sales clerk at Murphys Village Mart. Mr. McDowell is survived by his son, David Wayne McDowell Jr., of Augusta, Maine; his mother, Patsy McDowell, of Murphys; a brother, John Martin McDowell, of San Jose; a sister, Victoria Ann Neitro, of San Mateo; and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Sierra Bible Church in Murphys. Inurnment will be private. His family said donations in his memory may be made to the David McDowell Memorial Fund, Bank of Stockton, Angels Camp Branch, P.O. Box 99, Angels Camp, CA 95222.
Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. Mrs. Pine was born in Brawley, Imperial County. She graduated from Modesto High School in 1939 and married Howard Howe in 1940. That marriage ended in divorce. She married Charles Pine in 1954, and they were married for 54 years. They moved to Tuolumne County in 1954 so Charles could take a job as a mechanic for Pickering Lumber Co. They spent their summers at logging camps in the forest until moving to Ripon when Pickering had a strike in 1960. They returned to the county in 1977 and built a home in Jamestown, where they lived until the mid-1990s. They were longtime members of Sonora Baptist Church. They were devout Southern Baptists, very active in home mission work. They traveled throughout California, Hawaii, Alaska and Mexico to help with construction projects. They also spent many summers as camp cooks at Christian Beret camps for developmentally disabled youth. In retirement, they traveled in their motor home, becoming part of the “snowbird” set each winter at the Salton Sea slabs in Southern California. In addition to her husband, of Modesto; Mrs. Pine is survived by her children, Alice Berg, of Dorrington, Buell Howe, of Livingston, William Pine, of Richmond, and Amy Dillion, of Texas; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Carol Tackett, of Solano County; brother, George Bower, of Modesto; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Orangeburg Baptist Church in Modesto.

EICH — A service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sierra Bible Church for Sonora pharmacist Irv Eich, 54, who died Feb. 23 near his Soulsbyville residence.
