Explosive device closes downtown streets

Several streets around the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office were closed Saturday night as fire and law enforcement officials investigated an explosive device in a pickup truck.

According to Sheriff's Office Lt. Dan Bressler, an elderly couple went to the Sheriff's Office lobby, 28 Lower Sunset Drive, about 5:30 p.m. to inquire about disposing of an old hand grenade, which they had driven to the office in their pickup.

The grenade still had its pin intact. Calaveras County Sheriff's Bomb Squad officials Saturday night said they were uncertain about the age, but believed it was pre-1940.

Sonora Police Department officials planned to take the grenade to an undisclosed location to detonate it.

Closed streets included Yaney Avenue, Lower Sunset Drive and Jackson Street.
