Hotel robbery suspects nabbed |
Three suspects are in custody following an invasion-style armed robbery at the Murphys Hotel early Tuesday morning.
The hotel janitor, a 40-year-old man, was cleaning the hotel when he was confronted by a masked gunman just before 2:30 a.m., according to the Calaveras County Sheriff's Department.
The gunman forced the janitor to the hotel kitchen where he ordered
him to lay on the floor. The gunman then bound the janitor's hands
behind his back with duct tape and placed a towel over the janitor's
head. The janitor told detectives a second suspect arrived and assisted
in taking money from a cash drawer.
Additionally, the suspect disabled several of the surveillance cameras inside of the hotel during the robbery, police said.
Detectives were able to establish suspects based on the
surveillance footage that was available prior to the surveillance
cameras being disabled.
About 12:15 p.m, detectives conducted a traffic stop on the 1800
block of Highway 4 in Arnold on a vehicle they believed was involved in
the robbery. Detectives found a bank bag containing cash believed to be
stolen from the Murphys Hotel. Detectives arrested the driver, Jose
Quintero, 23, of Arnold, and his passenger, Erika Aguilar, 24, of
Angels Camp. At approximately 3 p.m., detectives conducted a traffic
stop on the third suspect, Jesus Alverez, 25, of Arnold, and took him
into custody without incident.
Detectives then served a search warrant at a residence on the 3200
block Diablo View Court in Arnold where they seized cash, a firearm,
clothing and gloves from the residence.
Quintero was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for suspicion of
robbery, conspiracy, possessing stolen property, resisting or
obstructing a public officer, threatened crime with intent to
terrorize, vandalism, false imprisonment and kidnapping. His bail is
set at $320,000.
